To bring attention to the great work Michigan parents are doing everyday in “Making Healthy the Easy Choice in School”, a Zeeland parent was recognized for her efforts and inducted into the Michigan Team Nutrition Health Champion Hall of Fame.
Zeeland, MI – On May 21, students and faculty at Lincoln Elementary in Zeeland, Michigan assembled to celebrate the induction of Lincoln Elementary parent, Amy Scheerhorn, into the Michigan Team Nutrition Health Champion Hall of Fame. The induction was part of the Michigan Department of Education’s Michigan Team Nutrition Contest, “Making Healthy the Easy Choice in School”, which Scheerhorn was the Grand Prize Winner. Scheerhorn’s induction recognized her leadership role in shaping health standards for snacks at Lincoln Elementary School fundraisers and parties, as well as leading the school wide walking initiative, “Walk It.” The contest was developed in partnership by Michigan Team Nutrition, Michigan Department of Education, United Dairy Industry of Michigan, and Parent Action for Healthy Kids, and was designed to bring attention to the great work Michigan parents are doing to create healthy schools through nutrition and physical activity.
The grand prize for the first inductee into the Michigan Team Nutrition Health Champion Hall of Fame was a special assembly at Lincoln Elementary with former Detroit Lions All-Pro, Herman Moore. Moore spoke to students during their lunch period about healthy habits and motivated them to get active and lead healthy lifestyles. He also facilitated a hands-on activity to teach students how to make a nutritional power smoothie. The grand prize was made possible through the generosity of United Dairy Industry of Michigan and Fuel Up to Play 60.
The contest truly exemplifies the great work of parents, as well as a commitment in Michigan to cultivate a spirit of working together in the community to advocate and champion initiatives that help lead our children and students to healthy choices that can last a lifetime.
