Is mistletoe part of your family’s holiday tradition? Besides a kiss under the mistletoe being fun, endearing and affectionate, consider this tradition a perfect lead-in to talk with your kids about healthy relationships, sexuality and the different things a kiss can mean.

You may ask yourself, but what does this have to do with the holidays? Gathering and connecting with loved ones at this time of year has everything to do with the importance of relationships including love, respect, and honesty. With the extended vacation time, it’s a golden opportunity to look for door openers to conversation and teachable moments, like kissing under the mistletoe or talking to Grandma or Grandpa about the first time they fell in love. The modeling and discussion of healthy relationships with friends and family now, will build a healthy foundation for relationships later in life.

Be open to sharing your values and don’t underestimate the great need that children feel – at all ages – for close relationships with their parents and for their parents’ guidance, approval, and support.

As parents, we are the primary abstinence and sexuality educators of our children. Continued communication at home is vital in helping our young people avoid sexual relationships they are not yet prepared for that may have serious consequences including pregnancy, HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, age-appropriate conversations about relationships and intimacy should begin early in a child’s life and continue through adolescence. Resist seeing it as a onetime “talk” but rather as an on-going 18-year conversation.
